Google Scholar API: frequently asked questions

What is the Google Scholar API?

It is a REST API that returns Google Scholar results as JSON: papers, author profiles, citation counts and citation formats.

Does it return the full text of papers?

No. It returns metadata and links. When Google Scholar lists a direct PDF, the link is included, but whether a file is available depends on its source.

Is the data real time?

Results reflect what Google Scholar returns when the request runs. Citation counts change over time, so refresh them on your own schedule.

Can I cite a paper from the API result?

Yes. Use the cite endpoint with the paper id to get APA, MLA, Chicago and BibTeX formats. Check each format before you submit your work.

How is it billed?

Per request, as shown in the endpoint table below. New accounts receive 200 credits after verification.

Is it legal to use Google Scholar data?

You are responsible for complying with Google's terms and the copyright rules that apply to the papers you use. The API returns metadata and links, not licensed full text.

Before integrating

Live and example data

Check the Live or Sandbox label before running. Examples demonstrate the response structure and do not guarantee live service status.

Credits and limits

Pricing depends on the endpoint and billable units. Failed live requests are not replaced with billable examples. Check your account limits before running repeated requests.

Handling errors

Keep the request ID for troubleshooting. For 429, respect Retry-After when provided. If a create or delete request loses its connection, check the resource state before retrying.
